Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa Islands located southeast of Indonesia’s island Bali. Nusa Penida isn’t filled with beach clubs or trendy restaurants, but it has some of the most photogenic sights in Indonesia. Here are 14 reasons why you must visit Nusa Penida:

How to get to Nusa Penida

You can take the ferry which leaves multiple times per day from Sanur (East Bali) and takes about 45 minutes. Book in advance for the guaranteed lowest price which often includes a hotel pick-up.

Book your ticket: Sanur – Nusa Penida Ferry

Getting around the island

As soon you get a shore and this will be in Buyuk, you will get overrun by taxi drivers whom will offer you high prices or their own scooter. (we suggest not to take their scooter)

Here is where your internet will come in handy so make sure you have plenty of Mb’s and downloaded at least one or two offline maps!

We hired two scooters at the scooter rental, just one minute walk at your right side as soon you come a shore. The price was around IDR 70.000 per day, but we got them for IDR 60.000 ($4) because we rented them for four days.

3. Snorkeling or diving

With crystal blue waters and plenty coral reefs you have to take your time to explore the under water world. While some of us might not have a diving license, snorkeling is a great option as many of these marine animals swim near the surface.

Diving

Every month new dive resorts on Nusa Penida are opening their doors. Get training at the resort and in open water to finally get your PADI!

4. Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Overlooking the whole east coast of Nusa Penida is the best from the Thousand Islands Viewpoint. Located on the same point as the treehouse. The view on the 200-meter high cliffs and white-sand beaches are just one to take in for a moment.

5. Angel’s Billabong

The second popular thing to do in Nusa Penida is visiting the natural infinity pool named Angel’s Billabong. Take a dip in the super clear water. Be aware to not go too near the edge of the pool since the sea gets over and create dangerous situations.

9. Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach is a magical white sand beach on the East side of the island, surrounded by cliffs and rock formations. It’s quite a drive from Crystal Bay, but it’s an amazing trip. Drive 2 hours through local villages, high fiving happy kids, dodging dogs and holes in the road along the North side of the island untill you reach Atuh Beach. Ask the locals for directions to the beach once arrived.

10. Kelingking Cliff Lookout

Here is a great little tip for enjoying Kelingking Secret Point Beach from a unique angle. Instead of hiking down the stairs, head to the right along the cliffs. There is a worn path along the cliff edge but no railing so be careful. Here you can find multiple epic viewpoints, with arguably a better look at the beach than the hike. It’s an awesome spot for sunset and doesn’t involve any hiking for those of you out there looking for the easy option. We came back two nights later after our beach session down at the bottom and just caught the sunset up on these cliffs. Definitely one of the best sunset spots on the island of Nusa Penida and a unique angle of Kelingking Secret Point Beach.
